What Is IPL?

Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) is a noninvasive procedure used to target inflammation around the eyes and enhance skin. The heat from treatment helps break down oil buildup in the meibomian glands to support your tear film and alleviate dry eye symptoms.

IPL can also remove unwanted hair and address uneven pigmentation in your skin to help with potential issues like sun spots and redness from rosacea.

Managing Dry Eye with IPL

While many treatments can help soothe dry eye symptoms, not all of them treat the root cause of dry eyes. IPL can address common underlying causes of dry eyes like meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and blepharitis.

MGD develops when the oil glands in your eyes become clogged and can’t produce enough oil for your tear film. The heat from IPL treatments helps melt and release trapped oils in your meibomian glands to improve the health and stability of your tear film, leading to lasting dry eye relief.

What Is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids and is commonly seen in people with oily skin, rosacea, or dandruff. When you have blepharitis, your eyelids may look red and swollen or feel like they’re sore. You may also notice flakes or crusts at the bottom of your eyelashes.

IPL can help reduce the inflammation associated with blepharitis.

The exact number of treatments you need can vary, but in many cases, we recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart. Some people notice a decrease in symptoms after their first or second appointment. You may also need periodic treatments to maintain your results.

Generally, the results you get from IPL treatments can last from 6 months to 1 year, but that can vary based on your eye health, the severity of your symptoms, and other factors.

For lasting dry eye relief, we generally recommend 4–6 treatments on a monthly schedule. You may need more or fewer treatments depending on the severity of your symptoms. Some people feel improvements after the first or second session.

Symptom relief from IPL treatments can fade eventually. This means you may have to get additional follow-up treatments after a certain period of time.

Rejuvenating Skin with IPL

IPL can enhance the appearance of your skin. The heat generated from the light energy helps your body remove unwanted pigmentation in skin cells and address several skin conditions simultaneously.

IPL can also reduce the appearance of skin damage caused by sun exposure. IPL is gentler on the skin compared to laser treatments, but you may require more sessions to see results. The results from IPL treatments can also vary based on your unique skin.

What Conditions Can IPL Treat?

People may choose to get IPL treatments for many reasons. IPL can help with the following skin concerns:

    • Acne
    • Redness
    • Age spots
    • Spider veins
    • Stretch marks
    • Unwanted hair
    • Skin discoloration
    • Fine lines & wrinkles

Your skin may be sensitive and red for a few hours after an IPL treatment. These effects are typically brief, but can last for a few days in some cases. While your skin heals, avoid using moisturizers, wash your face with a cleanser for sensitive skin, and be sure to wear sunscreen while outside.

The aesthetic results of IPL can vary, but in many cases, they can last from 6 months to 1 year. With maintenance sessions, you can extend the longevity of your results.

Hair Removal with IPL

IPL can be a fast and convenient way to remove unwanted hair and can target many areas of the body at once.

During treatment, a handheld device is held up to your skin and used to deliver controlled light pulses that are converted to heat by your body. The heat energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and travels down, reducing the follicle’s ability to grow more hair.

What Does IPL Hair Removal Feel Like?

Generally speaking, IPL doesn’t cause intense pain. The most you may feel is the sensation of someone flicking a rubber band against your skin. The procedure is fairly quick, so this feeling won’t last for long.

Your skin may be red and sensitive for a few hours after the treatment. In some cases, those effects can last for 1 or 2 days.

IPL can be thought of as a semi-permanent treatment, with results lasting up to 1 year. Eventually, your body will create new follicles and your hair may begin to grow back. In this case, maintenance sessions can help extend the results of the treatment.
